World’s biggest containership unveiled by HMM
Hyundai Merchant Marine’s (HMM) has recently unveiled the biggest container ship in the world.
HMM Algeciras’ has a capacity of 24,000 teu, and is the first of twelve in a new fleet of megaships scheduled for sequential delivery by September 2020.
The vessel was launched at the Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME) shipyard and the naming ceremony was attended by South Korea’s President Moon Jae as well as 160 other leading figures in South Korean politics.
The current global trade downturn means it may be some time before the capacity limits of the ship can be tested, since Asian ports are being left half empty as a result of restrictions due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
HMM Algeciras will be deployed on Far East Europe 4 (FE4) service, an Asia-North Europe trade lane of THE Alliance.
