Update from DEFRA - Clean Air Zones
The following announcements regarding Clean Air Zones have been made by the Joint Air Quality Unit, which is part of DEFRA.
Portsmouth
It was announced that the Portsmouth Class B Clean Air Zone (CAZ) is now live. Since 00.01am 29th November 2021, non-compliant vehicles driven in Portsmouth will be charged.
Who will be affected?
To enter Portsmouth's Clean Air Zone, charges will be levied if they are driving a bus, coach, taxi, private hire vehicle or a heavy goods vehicle (HGV) which do not meet:
- Euro 6 emissions standards for diesel vehicles
- Euro 4 emissions standards for petrol vehicles
Details of compliance requirements and exemptions can also be found here. Operators of vehicles which are eligible for an exemption are urged to apply as soon as possible.

Greater Manchester and Bradford
Greater Manchester and Bradford were added to the Government’s vehicle checker on Monday 15th November. Please check the ‘Drive in a clean air zone’ page to find out if you will be charged when the zones launch in 2022.
Greater Manchester were expected to open their financial support scheme for Heavy Goods Vehicles (HGVs) on Tuesday 30th November – please visit Cleanairgm for further details.
